As we’re working on putting our boat back together, I’m working on putting myself back together. As a mom of ten children, oldest of ten siblings, wife of thirty years, and trained midwife, I’ve spent a lot of my life taking care of other people. Unfortunately I didn’t take care of myself the way I’ve urged others to do. Funny how that happens. Oh well, now’s better than never!Read More
It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since we purchased our boat! What a wild ride…
I seriously never thought it was going to take this long to get all of her systems put back together and ready to sail. People will tell you it’s going to take longer than you expect - but I never put much stock in what other people say so here we sit…Read More
I’ve been thinking a lot about how much trash our family generates.
It’s a TON! At least one 13 gallon back per day… it might not be crammed full, but it’s full enough to warrant setting it out to be picked up by the guy that collects trash in our RV park every morning. It’s less trash than when we were a family of twelve for sure… but once we’re on our boat in the middle of the ocean where will we store that trash?Read More
As we are getting closer to getting our sailboat in the water my mind has been twirling around the transition to living aboard. I don’t think we’re actually going to have that much trouble seeing how we’ve been living in 280 sq ft for the past few years. One of the things that has been on my mind is building a minimalist capsule wardrobe for each of us.Read More
I've been reading a book by Martha Beck titled Finding Your Own North Star. The subtitle is "claiming the life you were meant to live". In it she talks about the essential self and the social self... each of these serve an important purpose in creating a life you don't need a vacation from.Read More
Self Care... it's a word that conjures up visions of spa days and pampering. Something that's outside of my normal routine as a wife, mom, and business woman. Who has time, opportunity, or spare cash for these things... all at the same time?Read More
The phrase "the road less traveled" comes from a poem by Robert Frost entitled, The Road Not Taken. Have you read it in it's entirety? No? Here, it is...Read More
"I'm so busy... I'll get around to that when things slow down."
I've heard AND said this phrase many times over the years.
As my kids have grown life just keeps getting faster - when does that elusive time come when I can get to those things I want to do when "things slow down?"Read More
Somedays are harder than others. And you know what? That’s ok.
It’s ok that life isn’t all roses and rainbows because if it was we wouldn’t appreciate how wonderful it can be. I know that we all get that on a logical level, but sometimes I think emotionally we forget.Read More
We bought a sailboat!
After spending a couple of months scouring the internet and walking the docks in Texas we found the perfect boat for our family!Read More
It's easy, oh so easy to hand my kids an electronic device and know that they will be entertained and distracted while I'm trying to get my own work done... on an electronic device.Read More
Many people would probably have a lot more to say about this than we do. Our “must have list” isn’t actually very long… we hired a consultant to help us with this part of our journey, and they keep asking for more “must have items” to help us narrow our search. The reality is that I’ll take just about anything that meets these parameters.Read More
We went sailing for the first time ever today!! It was AMAZING.
Over the years I have refused to live near water always imagining one of my ten children slipping away and drowning while I wasn't looking. Todd now is shocked to hear me begging for a sailboat.Read More
A couple days boondocking on the beach? Heck yeah!!
Todd had a roof to install on an RV that was near Galveston this week. We looked at campgrounds nearby and were not surprised to see them prohibitively expensive (including a kid tax which is charged per child).Read More
As I stared up into the lemon tree hunting for fruit that hadn't been plucked, seven voices begged to be the first to use the basket on a stick I was holding in my left hand. In that moment the life I've been chasing found me.Read More
The media is full of people being called out for getting it wrong - and I'm not talking about the criminals - they're ordinary people making decisions that someone else disagrees with.. This happens everywhere we turn, social media, news networks, sports commentary and entertainment shows... they all have something to say about a decision someone made.Read More

You may or may not have caught on to the fact that we are traveling in a travel trailer with five of our ten kids as we explore the United States. We have a long history of adventurous road trips over the years starting with our honeymoon when we drove from Mesa, Arizona to the Grand Canyon and on to our first home in Utah.Read More
Do you lie? I do.
What are the biggest whoppers you've told?
Here are some of mine:
